Does Texas Require Auto Insurance?
Yes, it is required by law in Texas for drivers to be able to show proof that they can pay for any accidents they cause while driving. This is often done by purchasing car insurance from any of the dozens of insurance providers in Texas. There’s no requirement as to which company you should use, which is why you should work with an insurance broker to find the best rates for the coverage you want.
If there is money owed on the vehicle you drive, the lender will require that you have collision and comprehensive insurance coverage. In fact, it will be impossible to be approved for a loan if you do not have these two types of coverage or don’t provide proof of them.
Types of Car Insurance Coverage
There are many different car insurance coverage options for drivers in Texas, including the following:
What is Not Covered by a Car Insurance Policy?
The majority of car insurance policies in Texas do not cover the following:
-
Any damage that you caused to your vehicle intentionally
-
Accidents that occur while driving in Mexico, racing, or driving for business
-
Equipment that is not permanently installed in the vehicle
-
Accidents that occur when driving a car regularly that isn’t owned by you (commercial vehicle)
-
Accidents that occur while driving to deliver food, or driving for a rideshare company, or delivering other items for a fee
How Does an Insurance Company Decide The Amount of a Premium?
When applying for a car insurance policy, the insurance company will take into account a few different considerations when determining the amount of your premium. The considerations taken into account include the following:
-
Where the car is located most of the time (a city versus the suburbs)
-
Your claims history and driving record
-
Your credit score
-
How the car is used (to do business or only to drive to and from work)
-
The type of car you have (rates are higher for cars that cost more to repair and for luxury, sports, and high-performance vehicles)
What Are Insurance Companies Not Allowed to do?
Texas car insurance companies are not allowed to do the following:
-
Charge you a higher premium or deny you coverage because of your race, age, color, religion, or national origin
-
Charge you a higher premium or deny you coverage because of your marital status, gender, disability, or geographic location unless the company can prove you provide a greater risk to insure than others
-
Charge you a higher premium or deny you coverage because of your credit score
